The beginner’s guide to racing

Want to enjoy the racing festivities, without sounding like a complete novice? We’ll ensure you’re a little better informed with some simple equine terminology…

    • Hand: The unit of measurement of a horse.
    • Progeny: Offspring by a certain stallion or from a certain mare.
    • Sire: The father of a horse.
    • Quinella: A bet in which you have to correctly select the first two horses in a race in any order.
    • Trifecta: A bet in which the first three finishers must be picked in the correct order.
    • A bet each way: Like placing two bets on the same horse, i.e. a $5 each-way bet would cost $10. The first $5 is a win bet, and will pay out if the horse comes first. The second $5 is a place bet, so will pay out if the horse secures a place in the race.
