This week’s etiquette question:

Q. I’ve been invited to two events being held on the same night. Should I go to both? If not, which one should I choose?

  • A. While going to two parties on one night may be technically possible, it can be a bit of a logistical nightmare. Do you really want to be clock-watching from the moment you arrive at Party 1, instead of settling in for a relaxed chat, drink and dance? By the time you actually get to Party 2 (factoring in travel and parking time), it could be all but over … and the host of Party 2 won’t feel great about being your second choice for the night.
  • The old rule goes like this: you should always accept the first official invitation you receive, and any others after that should be politely declined. Even though you may secretly want to go to the second event more than the first one you’ve been invited to, it’s not good form to ditch the initial invite after you’ve already accepted it.
