Bunting is a great way to turn your leftover or scrap fabric into a pretty party or room decoration. Bunting can really liven up an outdoor dining area, and can transform a lounge room or simple hired space into a special event venue. It also looks fantastic in kids rooms, so the D.I.Y effort can be well worth it. Here’s a simple step by step guide to creating your own!
-
What you will need:
• Scrap fabric (if you don’t have any, a visit to your parent’s place will normally uncover some. Fabric remnants can also be bought from many fabric stores and you can also collect it from old clothing you’re ready to throw out)
• Thread and needle
• 13mm wide bias binding tape
• Pinking shears
1 - Draw a triangle on some cardboard to the size you’d like your flags. Cut it out, this will be your template for each piece of fabric
2 – One at a time, pin your template to your fabric and cut around it using pinking shears (this gives the flags a nice finish and avoids any fraying. Continue until you have enough flags.
3 - Evenly space out your flags along the bias binding tape. Mix colours and patterns if you like, you can have some real fun with this. Fold the shortest edge of the fabric over the bias binding tape and pin it in place.
4 - Sew on the flags with a simple straight stitch, leaving at least 40cm of tape free from flags at each end for hanging.
5 – hang your bunting and ENJOY!
